Recent reports have surfaced regarding an arrest connected to the condition of animals at a pet store in my area. According to local news outlets including KCCI, the Des Moines Register, We Are Iowa, and MSN, several animals were removed from the property due to reported concerns about improper care and unhealthy conditions.
The owner has been charged, though as of now, I have not seen any further updates regarding the outcome of the case. As with any ongoing legal matter, it’s important not to speculate.
Still, hearing this news brought back memories I hadn’t thought about in years.
Mixed Experiences Over Time
Over the years, the store has received a wide range of feedback. Some customers on Yelp have expressed concerns about animal care and cleanliness, while others—particularly on Google—have shared more positive experiences, often mentioning helpful and knowledgeable staff.
Like most online reviews, these reflect individual perspectives and don’t always provide the full picture. People are often more motivated to share negative experiences than positive ones, which can sometimes skew perception.
At the same time, reporting from the Des Moines Register and We Are Iowa indicates that this is not the first time the store’s owner has faced charges related to animal care.
My Experience, Years Ago
When I was about seven years old, my parents let me get my first small pets—two gerbils. We visited a nearby pet store, excited to pick them out.
I remember being amazed at how many little animals were in one tank. When it came time to choose, the employee reached in and picked two gerbils up by their tails, placing them into a box for us to take home.
My mom asked if they were both the same sex—we didn’t want unexpected babies. The response we got was something along the lines of, “You can just bring them back if they have babies.”
At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I was just excited. But looking back, that moment stands out.
We took them home anyway, did some quick research, and—after more guesswork than expertise—determined they were likely both female. Thankfully, they were. Those two little gerbils lived for about three years and became a meaningful part of my childhood—even if I still couldn’t tell you which one was Nibbles and which one was Cibbles.
Returning as I Got Older

Years later, my dad and I would occasionally return to the same store to look at fish and supplies. We had a small tank at home, and it became something we enjoyed working on together.
Between roughly 2012 and 2016, we visited several times.
Even as a kid—with limited knowledge about exotic animals—I remember feeling uneasy about some of the conditions I saw.
From what I recall:
- Snakes were kept in small tubs or tanks with minimal setup, with little to no enrichment
- Rabbits were housed in small cages with wire flooring
- Birds appeared to be in enclosures that didn’t leave much room to move
At the time, I didn’t fully understand proper care standards. I just knew something didn’t feel right.
A Nuanced Conversation
To be fair, the animal community can be incredibly passionate—and sometimes critical. People care deeply about animal welfare, and that’s a good thing. But it can also mean that situations are occasionally misunderstood or described without full context.
Having worked at an animal shelter for several years, I’ve seen firsthand how complex animal care can be. Not every concerning situation is as clear-cut as it may initially seem.
At the same time, there are fundamental standards that matter. Proper housing, nutrition, and medical care aren’t optional—they’re essential.
Looking Ahead
I haven’t been back to the store in many years, so I can’t speak to its current day-to-day conditions. And with the legal case still unfolding, it’s important not to draw conclusions beyond what has been publicly reported.
But hearing about the recent situation, combined with past experiences and public concerns, raises important questions about how animals are cared for—and how those concerns are addressed over time.
More than anything, I hope situations like this—wherever they occur—lead to better outcomes for the animals involved.

Final Thoughts
This isn’t about making claims beyond what’s been reported. It’s about reflecting on how our experiences shape the way we view animal care and responsibility.
If there’s one takeaway, it’s this:
Where we choose to get our pets matters.
Taking the time to research, ask questions, and advocate for proper care can make a real difference.
